Why AI Search visibility matters
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude web search now answer a meaningful share of the queries that used to send people to traditional search results. Every time an LLM answers a question about your industry without citing you, that's a click you didn't get.
AI Search visibility is the new ranking surface — and most SEO tools haven't caught up. The question isn't “am I on page 1 of Google?” anymore. It's “does ChatGPT mention me when someone asks about my category?”
How this scan works
- You enter a query you'd expect to be cited for and your domain.
- We run that query against an LLM with web-search enabled — the same kind of pipeline ChatGPT and Perplexity use to ground their answers.
- We extract every URL the model cited in its answer and check whether any of them belong to your domain.
- You see the full answer, every cited source, and a clear yes/no on whether you were among them.
The free version runs one engine. The full Web Design Service platform runs the same query against five engines daily — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude — across every tracked query for every project, with share-over-time charts and Claude-authored recommendations on what to fix.
What to do when you're not cited
Three structural moves account for the bulk of AI Search wins:
- Publish an
llms.txtat your domain root telling AI crawlers which pages matter. Use our llms.txt generator to draft one. - Add structured data (FAQ, HowTo, Article schema) to your highest-intent pages. Generate it with the schema generator.
- Write content that directly answers the queries you want to be cited for. LLMs cite passages that read like answers. Long, hedged, throat-clearing intros get skipped.
FAQ
Which AI engines does the free scan check?
The free scan runs one query against a web-search-enabled LLM and extracts the cited sources. The full ItzSEO platform runs every tracked query against ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude daily, with share-over-time charts.
Why don't ChatGPT citations match what I see in regular Google?
LLMs ground their answers using a different retrieval pipeline than Google's classic search. They favor pages that read like direct answers to questions, have strong topical authority, and include explicit citations or quotable passages. A page that ranks #5 on Google but is hard to extract from might never get cited; a page that ranks #20 but is tightly written can.
How often should I re-check?
AI Search results shift more frequently than classic SERPs because the model's web context refreshes constantly. Weekly checks are a good cadence for a single tracked query; the platform's daily monitoring catches movements within 24 hours.
What's the rate limit on the free scan?
Three scans per IP per day. The full platform monitors unlimited queries across all your projects with no per-IP cap.
Can I scan a competitor's domain instead of my own?
Yes. The tool just checks whether the domain you provide is among the cited sources for your query. It works just as well for monitoring a competitor's AI Search presence.
Does the scan affect my SEO?
No. We're a read-only retrieval — same as any other AI search query. Nothing about your site changes from running the check.
